Fattoria di Fugnano, San Gimignano

The story of this small winery is almost like a fairytale. At the age of only 23 the Sicilian girl, Laura, opposed against her parents. With the news of the passing of her grandfather the parents wanted to sell his farm and land in San Gimignano, but Laura, remembering so many wonderful summer holidays by her grandfather, said “I will take over the farm.”
Leaving her studies at Palermo University she came to Tuscany with only 2 hands, willpower and many ideas. Her grandfather had produced bulk wine of acceptable quality, but Laura wanted more. And with hard work, passion and a little help from friends she managed to bottle her first wine of the vintage 2002. Since then production methods and experience have done wonders and Fattoria di Fugnano today produce several price winning wines. On about 13 hectares of land the total annual production is about 60.000 bottles. The heart of the production is of course the Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG, the first white DOCG in Italy. But even the Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG have its’ space. Lately her own variants of Super Tuscans have started to gain ground, such as Donna Gina (named after Laura’s grandmother) and Legami, meaning connections. Connections with the past, connections with the land and also connections with her native Sicily.
